Though Standards Australia have strict compliance procedures for caravan and motor home manufacturers in Australia, no such stringent requirements are required for caravan and RV water filtration systems.
So, "caveat emptor!", let the buyer beware!

No Australian Standards apply to caravan and motor home water filtration systems!
However, an Australian Standard, the AS/NZ 4348 does cover the elimination of the live cysts Giardia and Cryptosporidium. This standard is quite rigorous in its endorsement. It requires that live Giardia and Cryptosporidium be put through the filter system and that at least 99.99 percent of the cysts are totally eliminated.
Not many companies apply for its endorsement, knowing it cannot be met.
However, the American version of this standard only requires a surrogate dust powder the size of the cysts to be put through the water filter system.
This standard does not consider how the cysts may interact within the filter media itself.
Simply, if no powder trace is found on the product side of the water filter system ,it passes the test..
Many companies rely on this USA NSF 53 standard as the foundation for their quality and certification claims.
Interestingly enough, those using this standard never claim the word “elimination” for these dysentery causing bugs that commonly affect travelers, especially in the RV community.

We certify that the Australian Standard 4348 is met.
Manufacturers can always hide behind systems performance by using words such as reduction or removal.
But, you can not hide behind the word elimination.

You can surf the Internet and buy cheap rv and caravan water filtration systems, without doubt. The backyard Internet operators are a dime a dozen and growing at a cancerous rate. Their quality, performance and backup service however, is not so apparent.
One single bout of dysentery, stomach cramps or illness due to inferior water filtration performance will quickly eradicate the saving you made in that bargain buy.
